Some companies, namely Procter & Gamble state that they only test on animals when it is mandated and required by law – this is still animal testing and I, for one, will continue to boycott all companies involved in animal testing, until they state they have ceased these cruel and unreliable practices.
Although mainstream products are indeed affordable, have you ever really thought about what’s in these products? How about chemicals, some toxic–hence the need to have the product tested–preservatives, etc. Natural (& cruelty free!) products though they may be a bit higher in price as the ‘demand’ is not there due to status quo preference, you might want to consider the long-term effects.
